Weymouth is a great angling location with many good marks. The problem with the place is that you dont get a true picture of what is going on.

It has a huge charter fleet, the countries biggest, consisting of some of the best boats in the country.

It also has a good publicity machine well managed by Weymouth Angling Centre.

With the amount of boats and the number of anglers fishing daily it is bound to turn up some good fish. What you are not told about is the amount that dont catch or catch very little.

That is the same with all boats and ports but Weymouth appears better than it is simply because of the volume of boats and anglers.

As a point of concern there was an awful lot of charter boats tied up yesterday on what was a reasonable forecast that they could handle easily. Most of the great names had not gone out and Weymouth was quiet. I know it is early season but I expected a lot more to have had bookings.

We gave it our best shot but as Snowy says, the wind was quite nippy - just a bit early still.  I learned a few do's and don'ts for our next turbot hunt which is on, umm, let me see - oh yes, in 2 days time in the Channel Islands - if we catch any we'll put them back and tell them to keep heading north.

Not really a nightmare Hugh, a pleasant day in good company just a few minus points like the lack of fish!

The crew of the boat tried very hard for us and recognised their own inexperience. However they were open to all suggestions and were following the same drift lines as the other boats so location and technique could no be faulted.

The boat was an old Blyth 33, very stable and comfortable but it was slow. We reached the harbour mouth and they opened up the two Sabre engines, the boat roared into life, the stern settled down and we took off.................................at six knots, mind you with a following sea we topped out at eight  sometimes!!!!

One of lifes not to be forgotten experiences.
