Hi went fishing aboard Nab-Cat,skipperd by Barry meech on 2nd may and just happend to catch a splendid tope of 76lb on fresh mak.fished uptide on slack water....thanx Mr.Meech!LOL

i got bitten off at the fort on saturday ! 18 pound line/ i had two or three big head shakes and pop went the line never mind

Russ, I would strongly recommended increasing your line strength as most fish in the Solent can easily go through 18lb line, especially around the forts where smoothound, congar and rays will all easily chomp through that.  Unless I am targeting something like bream I always use 30lb minimum and normally 60lb at the forts.  If you hook a big fish then you want to land it.

Due to the strong tides in our area I always use braid, 35-40lb strength.  I tie it directly to my end tackle as shock leaders can be a pain with the knot acting as a weed magnet.  The only down side is that when you get snagged there is a higher chance that you will loose your gear.  The plus side is that I never loose a fish due to tackle breakages....which is the whole point of the excercise!

Have you got any photos of the 76lb tope and like said where abouts in the solent were you, just a rough idea i don't want any secret mark.
