Point taken Andy... :-)

(I needed the boat though to be able to follow you.... The trip past Mid Channel highlighted that point ten times over)...

The way you explain the benefits of the reels in question throws a different light on it..

I thought it was going the way of shiney = best.. Big smile

" Agree with you about the Saltist, I still have a couple of star drag models but binned the Lever Drag because it was a bag of cack."

Andy, was it the drag the reason for binning the lever drags?
I also have star drag saltists which I like, and also lever drag saltists which like you say are a bag of cack... However... if you service the drag every 6 months then they are not to bad.. A nuisance I know and a pain in the arris, but at least it keeps them serviceable..

It was the drag that was the problem. No way should you have to service it so frequently on a reel that costs megabucks.

The star drags are bullet proof, they dont wear very well and look scruffy in a short space of time but run like swiss watches.

Save your money Andy, and get something you maybe need instead..... Your ability far outweighs any shiney reel... :-)

Too true.... go abroad and get outfished by a local in a canoe with a handline........

But still.... shiny shiny....

Andy,

The lever drag has just one washer in it.. (You may know all this, so not trying to teach how to suck eggs)..
The grease/oil washes out very quickly because of the way its put together..
The single washer is the issue, if you remove it, clean it and grease it it will be ok again for a while..

I dont use them myself personally, but it suits my Missus as she is able to quickly change drag setting depending what she gets.
It just means every few months I have to take it apart and grease it..

If you need any looking at, let me know.

After all you've been thro I hope you will both be very happy

Rods,
Sonix Boat 12-20 seems the best of the middle order rods at 65ish if you shop around
Daiwa Team 12-20 at 155 from Mark if you want high-end.

Daiwa 12/20 Kenzaki very nice rods at around 100 or a really nice all round rod for the money Penn Powerstik Pro 20/30 65 incl hard carry tube, very tippy doesn't behave like a 20/30 until its got a good bend in it.
