I appreciate this leads on from the 3 bass rule post, but here's a situation.

We were to drifting 2 days ago over a local mark.  We arrived at 4.00pm and within the hour had about 9 bass and lots of mackerel but only 2 of the bass were keepers.

Next to us (I'm talking 10 metres if that), a small private boat with just 1 guy on board, double rodding, brought up and kept at least 20 bass.  He was there before we arrived and after we left so the likelihood is he had many more -he did not throw any back - if most of ours were undersize then he must have been catching undersize too.

Question:  Is it right or wrong to snitch on a fellow angler (especially when you are playing by the rules)

And if it is right, who would you snitch to?

Motoring back to the harbour, especially having read so much about the 3 bass rule lately, it just left a bad taste in the mouth knowing someone was so blatantly taking the p***.

The problem is I have spoke to a lot of the local guys leaving the public pontoon and have mentioned the 3 bass rule and a lot were unaware , but the ones that did know were in a fishing club.
So,maybe a word in the ear of someone who is flouting the law first then if they persist report them ??

And if that doesn't work then snitch on him as we should all be following the same rules, there's one thing keepingore than 3 bass but keeping the underside ones is totally ignorant.

I can understand the hesitation in "snitching", but I don't regard it as that. If you think of it in the same way as other areas of fishing, I see it as a responsibility to report illegal activity.

Seeing someone illegally netting a Salmon river, or stuffing Carp into a sack on a lake, I think puts it into perspective. I'd hope in those cases, we'd help the bailiffs by reporting it.

Is he really a "fellow angler"? or an opportunist helping to defeat our attempts to conserve fish stocks. Only when a few of them are caught and fined will an example be made to make others think twice. It will also help publicise the law which I'm sure few know about.

As an aside, I once (much to my wife's embarrassment) challenged a fishmonger in a big market who was selling clearly undersized "Wild Cornish Bass". I asked him if he was sure they were wild, and he got quite mad, insisting they were. So I told him he had a choice about what I should report him for, Trade Descriptions or selling undersized Bass. He just swore at me and I called MAFF and told them about it and they were very helpful. (whether they did anything about it, I don't know, but I never saw the same on his stall again)

I think to take a bit of video  or a few photos and say that you are going to report the fisherman
If enough of us do that, then when a boat approches they will move off the mark rather than
be reported again, but we cant be on all marks all of the time.  I had my 3bass today in 4 drifts
and carried on fishing and had a couple at 5lbs and let them go, I had decided that the first 3
in size will do and not try to swop fish. A 42cms fish is a good eating size for me

in this case I think the likelihood of a 1st offence   is a warning then if caught again they would   hit them   the fisheries   guys should   be putting posters up on every   slipway and marina   notice boards   and tackle shops informing   of law change to be fair

I think that the most sensible way to make this system work is to keep the first two sizable Bass and hold off for the bigger one.

we had big debate about this yesterday while fishing. the main thing everyone is saying is that its not known about, ie the 3 bass rule. no leaflets on boats or info in tackle shops or anywhere bar internet web sites and mags...... so a prosecution would be extremely hard early on in its life. i think they are going to play slap on the wrist and if we catch you again then go in full force approach like ray has said.

as for snitching, id give the **** mouth full if he's taking under sized fish and yes if the was fisheries near by let them know, as for more than 3 bass...... i do think 20 bass is bit excessive if he kept everyone but generally i don't care to grass anyone for personal consumption, as what ever they took that day is not even scratching the surface of what the comms take on a trip, thpo if i found out he was selling in on black market then that's different story.
