Thinking of heading out on Sunday 20th September to try find the first whittling perhaps a cod
If I remember Rightly last year the cod was slow to show anybody got any ideas where they may turn up first this year itís been quite bad weather I guess thatís churned the sea up a bit I just like to have the heads up on my best chances any ideas please thanks guys
Be good to share our results on here as it seems they are rare to come by
Bait still expensive £22 a box any cheaper ideas of bait ?
Good luck all I will let you know how it goes may start at Sandown bay areas !!

go up the solent any where from   hillhead to browndown don't   buy 5 pound boxes   bulk buy as many 1 pound   boxes   as you can afford for the   whole cod season initialy   more expensive the saving is take   5 or 6 boxes out with you defrost 1 box on way out and others only when you need to   so far this year   the most ive used in a sesh was 3 boxes and saved 2 instead of defrosting a whole 5 pound   box and wasting   some of it also   use   cuttle    as any left overs can be re frozen

Cuttle is a great bait & worth freezing up when they are around earlier in the year. Picked up several when out & about as well as catching a couple (had to be quick with the net).

Like Ray, I buy calamari in bulk via a mate who gets them via an Indian wholesaler. Still enough boxes left for next year. Also get as many velvet crabs during winter off the potters and freeze them down. Good for hounds, rays & bass . Boat & shore for hounds.

Fingers crossed for this weekend got Sunday hopefully wind is down a bit

Hi, we are out on the 22nd as there seems to be a weather window. We will be going to western solent for anything that takes the bait. Hoping the weed problem is solved, will let you know the results.

Went out to west Solent yesterday in flat sea and some sunshine. Lovely day with dogfish, thornback, gurnard. Lost big fish (gutted) something with teeth as it cut through trace. Spent the night in Yarmouth good food and beer then out to Totland this morning. Fishfinder buzzing from one metre down to bottom. Caught loads of bream, dogs and smoothound. Great couple of days with good company and spitfire giving a great display. This is what sea fishing is all about. Dave

Sounds great did try to contact you Tuesday afternoon but obviously unable to reach through the island lol!!
Got out later than expected so decided to stay local tried Gilkicker but only 2 small congers and one whittling
Perhaps the big one you lost was a larger conger
Glad you did well though hopefully out again Thursday for a bit
Lots of boats out but no shouting so not much caught I expect in the Solent anyway no weed this time so thatís good too
Keep in touch Dave

That sounds like a great couple of days Dave. Well done.
You're right there, keep it simple and enjoy the day (and the refreshments at night!)

Seems the odd one or two are about. I went out a couple of hours Tuesday evening for one micro pout.
Big tides but might try Sunday if the wind has settled to something doable.
Good luck if you are also out and about. J

Very good weather to go glad you caught some fish
Congers seem to be prolific these days mostly small but they put a nice bend in the rod especially if they are in the teens
Was unable to go Sunday so Iím hoping we get a window again soon thanks for your update and all on here too
Itís good to know when fish are being caught even if itís by others
Weíll done
Tight lines 🎣

Thought it was a bit of a fishy story 😂
Now letís go get some monster Cod
Remember my best ever was 33lb off the Needels in the 80s only to be beaten by my brother a couple of years later at 34lb those were the days when to catch 5 or 6 Or more good sized cod in a session was common and bait was at £5 a box
Must admit i miss that 🎣

The joke that backfired. Went out Thursday in fog and cold and managed doggies and one decent bass (returned) very cold return and thought wait till spring to fish again. I do this for fun!
