Agree there Ray. West Solent last week I must of counted 25 sets of nets.hard work trying to anchor somewhere. On a better note saw plenty of mackerel being caught off Dorset coast in boats so they should reach us few weeks time.

Was in Sandown last night 1st mark we tried kept dropping in to something and kept getting caught up no bite and I wondered if that was a lost net as no markers. we moved and all we had was dogs and pout.
Seems to be fishing is very poor this year also lots of brown algae in the water

How do you tell the difference between a set of nets and a line of pots if you see the two markers?

Hi guys, don't get down we are all very privaliged to have boats and get out on the water. I will always be a dangler rather than an angler but this web site got me through a lot of medical sh*t and you were all so positive when I joined. The year has started very slow but I'm sure it will end in being one of the best. By the sound of it I out fished the lot of you last week 😄 Don't forget the fish are the bonus it's all about being out there.

Yes I totally agree we are all very luck to be able to own boats and get out as and when we can, It was a splendid last on Sunday just to be out on the water, and you are right the odd nice fish to take home for tea is a bonus.

Dave saw you out there.
There is a run of old pots unmarked where you were. I have caught them before, pulled them to the surfac3 and cut the rope with difficulty. Too heavy to get out f the water.
Smoothound ,rays and dogfish, no plaice. Seem to be struggling at the mo. There is always next weekend...😊

Went out on my 17 Orkney yesterday early to East off Selsey. 2 of us had 18 bream. All takable size best was around 2.5lb. On change of tide had a drift on Medmery - nothing. Bracklesham bay bream marks covered in nets (so regretted the 1st move!) & pots so went to a bank further South & had some small hounds & dogs. Had some drifts for macks near Chi Harb entrance - had one plus a gar.Thunder storms forecast so wanted to be near home. Saw storm building around Selsey with thunder & so scooted back to Chi a bit earlier than planned. Wise move as it hit just after we recovered the boat.

Yes, fishing is tough at present but it is slowly getting better in my view.

I went out Friday off Selsey and had 8 or 9 bream, 5 smoothies (4 double figures), 2 tope (and had several others on but they bit thru my nylon as I wasnt targetting tope), a nice 5lb bass & loads of doggies.  Only tried for mackerel whilst at anchor but no joy.

I agree though htat Bracklesham is a pain at the moment with all the nets.

Keep the faith!

Dunc

Feel guilty about posting (get a life guys) we are lucky but it has turned up some good comments about improved fishing. So glad the mackerel have arrived and can't wait to catch my first turbut. We must have a meet at the riser again. Dave

No fishing yesterday as was cutting the hedge and then a very time consuming journey back and forth to Gosport to pick up a kayak.
However stopped for a couple of drifts at the fort and had the first Solent string of mackerel, 3 nice fat fish on th3 first drop ( and then nothing of course).
Very nice on the bbq.
Would be up for a drink too some stage. Anyone have any dates in mind?

Great to hear Palmshank, our boat is out of the water for its annual scrub but will be back in this week. you have just fished our stomping ground so it is great to know the fish are back, shame the weed is bad at sowley but that seems normal for this time of year.

Had charters - Good catches of Bream Tuesday & Wednesday on Boulder. Not so good Friday. Saturday only 2 where we had 52 on the Tuesday but loads of wrasse & few hounds. Today was beautiful - worked hard for patchy mackerel around Dean Tail after a few hounds on the bottom earlier.

We fished Sowley Saturday, it was dead. just a couple of Hounds.

Moved out deeper into the Solent nearer Solent Bank and fished one of the drop offs.   Found the Bream and Hounds and also a lack of Dogfish :)

Weed wasn't too bad.

Palmshank were you fishing in near the boom at Sowley?

Well, at last I got out there! Both Saturday AND Sunday!

Saturday with mate Dave: I didn't like the look of that east wind so went west to try for some Bream and Smoothound off Sowley. We had about a dozen Bream but mostly small with a couple of keepers and surprisingly only one Smoothound about 8lbs. At slack, we went to try Freshwater reef on the flood, but the wind had blown up and as it was going to be wind against tide, we went to Dolphin Bank to try for a Ray and maybe Tope instead. Two Small Eyed Ray and a load of doggies, plus a massive run from a good Tope which let go, was all we got.
Sunday with Allan: Same plan but in reverse. We fished Dolphin Bank on the ebb in the morning to try drifting it. Nothing except one Dog and a surprize Plaice of about 1.5lbs.
Anchored for the rest of the ebb and caught about 5 Tope, all small, one Small Eyed Ray and loads of Dogs. We tried fishing on the top of the bank first then moved to the deeper water on the northern edge drop-off, but it didn’t seem to make any difference.
When the tide turned we went to Sowley but apart from one Smoothound, it was dead, plus loads of weed to frustrate us.
had the feathers out for most of the time and caught two Mackerel!
So not a brilliant weekend of fishing, but after a lay-off of twelve months, it was great to be out there!

Sounds you had a good time Martyn even if not the most productive...
I was going to try down the west side next time out again.
Hoping it might be ok this next weekend, Sunday all being well.
Make sure you get out again soon!
All the best,
J

We missed the footie yesterday the lure of good weather and calm sea better than watching 22 over paid pretty boys kicking a ball about. we found a few mackerel on the way out although only in ones or twos but enough for bait. 1st stop was bullocks patch a few small bream got pestered by small pout, so we then push off out to a deeper mark and had Tope, Smoothhound and a Spotted ray and the ever present dogfish.
A great days fishing with not many boats about.

I was anchored next to you. There was a great display by a Spitfire after you left, doing loops over the forts. A bit of a distance away but the sound was incredible.

We fish sandbanks mate, anchor uptide and trott your baits down the side of the bank. We catch live launch first and either use live bait or strips of mackerel or launch. Catching them is pretty easy it’s finding them that’s the hard bit

Thanks, sounds like a plan...I guess on the banks off Selsey you need to pick pretty small tides as I know the tide for anchoring and weights needed can be brutal.
Is it worth drifting them with the same baits instead?
Reliving my youth...?actually I knew most of the Killers songs because my kids played them ad nauseum

Smaller tides. We anchor it upto about 4.5m

We also drift it, had bass and turbot Sunday on the drift

Been out west solent and totland bay had big smoothys and bream also loads of spider crabs on fresh mackerel baits. My gout forced us back in. Joys of getting old!!! on new medication so hoping more pain free fishing very soonSmile

Ouch, gout can be very painful. I get the occasional attack (usually after too much smoked fish ! ) and Colchicine  fixes it for me. I take a few tablets as soon as I feel it coming on and nip it in the bud. On prescription only.

Hi Guys Thanks for your concerns, the trigger for me is real ale so will have to stay with the lager. We are getting too much weed in the west solent so will be fishing towards Christchurch bay. Never ever thought I would say this but the heat has forced us off the boat and into the sea. I did manage to catch my first ever turbut but it was the size of a saucer:)
