Ive known of a 50lb plus off of west beach, it came in on a tope rig with a mackerel flapper doing the business. Puts to shame the other rays we caught there, which on any other day would have been a very good day 😀

Have you been stalking?? Yes, although they called it Chinook, same thing. Trolling off Tofino, self and daughter caught three each. We were self catering for two days after that so that salmon served very well plus the four huge Dungeness crabs we took from their trap.

Have relatives on Vancouver Island. Been a few times to Tofino. Best King was 26lb. Have been top fisherman on one occasion with name up on the wall chart on the pontoon(www.weighwest.com). Only had 2 halibut . Salmon were King / Chinooks & Kohos. My greatest memory is fishing on a misty day with pacific swells that towered above us and then on top you could see other boats & once grey whales appearing so close you could smell the odour of their breath when they came up to spout.

This was a very misty day (they get a lot of those) with a long swell so on the rare occasion we were close enough to another boat to see it, it kept dissappearing in the swell. Spooky. No whales but we got a lot closer to sea otters than we did on a bona fide Wildlife Watching Cruise and saw the biggest sunfish I have ever seen. Ended the day with a nice take-home bag! ![]() |
