We use an iPad with Navionics all the time.

There is a big red line that shows the boat heading. We just keep the line pointing towards the mark we wish to go to.

Not very sophisticated, but easy and foolproof !

Does your big red line always point upwards Hugh?
or can it be across the screen or even downwards

For reference I believe that if you have "sync my data" turned on everything is automatically backed up. To quote Navonics : "We strongly recommend that within the app you go to Settings and set “Sync my data” to ON. This means that all your personal data are safely backed up and automatically transferred to all your devices and restored to the same device in case of accidental deletion or crash. Your privacy in the process is guaranteed: nobody else can get to your personal data."

I think that when you first download the app you have an option to register with a user name, password etc. this presumably links you and your devices with Navonics for the purposes of sync, backup etc.
