Make your own Down-rigger or Troller.

Required items
A broken fishing rod.
Grp resin and hardener .
Lengths of just roven Grp glass material
Rubber gloves .or Disposable plastic gloves.
Fibreglass tape. approx 2" wide by 6 foot * optional
Peel ply. approx 2" x 6 foot *optional or plastic cling film.
wire or copper pipe 1/2" approx 12"
Broken sea fishing rod.
Rough / med and fine sandpaper.
Gloss paint the colour of the finished down-rigger / Troller.
A very small piece of sponge . Instead of or a paint brush.
Masking tape 1"

The first stage is all the cutting of the fishing rod.
cut to the size that will suit you best.
Tip section cut Butt section cut at the bottom and the top approx 6" to 8" above the reel seat.

Next the pipe..
Bend the pipe to the angle YOU require and insert into one end ...You may have to
play with the hammer to reduce the other end that will fit into the top section of the rod.
Don't be too fussy with this ....
The bottom section you may have to wrap some masking tape to the very bottom of the pipe before you
insert it so as it is a tight fit and will NOT rotate easily.
Push the two sections together now and check you have the right angle for You.!!
If not do it again till your happy with the angle.
Make sure now that the sections face the right way the rod holder should be on the inside
of the troller.
Place the Butt section into a vice or somewhere secure so as it will NOT twist or move.

Now the sticky bit.
Make sure you have the plastic cling film and resin along with the glass roven to hand before you start.
Gloves on then mix the resin.
Push the roven into the resin and draw out the wet strand pulling with one hand and squeezing out the
resin with the other.
Now wrap round the metal or copper pipe section only.
Wind the roven around the rod only. Your find the roven will flatten out itís self as you wrap.
Build it up so it is one layer over the top section and the bottom section by about an inch.
in other words the bent pipe now has the same radius as the rod .
Cover with cling film or clear plastic or peel ply and allow overnight to Harden.

Next day remove the plastic or Peel Ply and repeat the same way with more wet strands starting from the
butt section and continue to the tip and keep doing this but NOT going to the tip each time
but ending an 1Ē or two short each time. again only winding the roven around the rod. Your find the roven
will flatten out itís self as you wrap. So it will be easy to see any sections that need a little more wrapped
around it to keep it all uniform.
Add extra strands to the butt section to make a uniform reducing shape.

The last layer can be the glass fibre tape if you have some Ö
Again cover tightly with plastic and allow overnight to harden.
Or use Peel Ply.

Now the itchy bit.....

The next day
Remove the Peel ply or plastic.
Start sanding first rough then med then fine until smooth. By HAND FOR BEST RESULTS..
Wash off and allow to dry.
When dry apply an undercoat and Gloss paint what ever colour you wish the best results are had by using
a sponge dipped in the paint. and wiped along the rod.
The whole item can be made and completed fully in two days .
Allow to dry and then fit the tip ring or whatever you wish to use some use a small pulley.
Now completed fit your reel......... A boat fishing multiplier is best as they can take a bit of strain.
Never use a fixed reel .
Use mono or braided line thick if your using it as a down-rigger.
Thinner if you intend to troll with it. Or like me just use it to fish with as well a truly 3 in one rod.
