Had  a fulll day out today and fished about six miles out in the Eastern Solent. Very calm, but there was a bit of drizzle and light rain around midday.
Plenty of dogfish and three small conger - also plenty of small whiting, but out of the blue, caught one of two pounds.
I was just thinking of packing up around 3.30pm and one of the rods showed what looked like a rattly dogfish bite. Wound into it and it was a 4lb cod, my first for over two years. I obviously abandoned any thought of packing up, but nothing much else for the next hour or so before calling it a day.
My last two trips have easily been the most enjoyable i have had for what seems like ages.
For some  reason there seemed to be quite a lot of fireworks going off in Portsmouth as I came in - looked pretty impressive. Great end to a brilliant day.

Went out yesterday using the charter boat around 11am as wind began to die down & fished Medmery. Non stop action with loads of Whiting (20 or so keepers), straps, dogs, 10 lb undulate ray, a 5lb bass & a 9lb Spurdog (both of the last went back). All 3 taken on Cod baits.

Flat calm from 1pm & we had a beautiful sunset as we came back in up Chichester Harbour. She comes out the water Monday.

Ian on Kellys Heroes Charter (big Cat) had gone much further out  East of the Nab & had 13 Spurdog between 3 - 7 lb.

Spurs have to be returned as they are "vunerable"but are great sport like Hounds. It will be great if they do come back in numbers as it will compensate for the disappearance of the cod.

They are normally out deeper but I suspect the winds we have had have pushed them in. That is 2 I have had close in during last 3 months so they must be recovering. They used to be a pest hunting in packs and taking all the cod & other baits. The Whiting were full of sprats.
