You need one with a GPS receiver and pay your £39 for the Navionics download. Pay another £9 and you can get the sonar charts as well.

You dont need any type of contract.

Dave,

I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3.
Loaded Navionics..
Yes indeed its good, (Even though I havent actually used it as a chartplotter.. I bought it on impulse and as a spare).
It has GPS enabled anyway..
And when out and about I set my mobile phone as a wifi hotpsot and so can surf the net.. :-)

If you are looking for a RAM Mount, I have a cracking one which is super quality, is nice and neat and brand new boxed..
I bought it for my boat, but have decided that as its primarily for reading emails etc I do not need to mount it in a fixed position...

That way if you get bored and fancy some surfing then youporn.... AHEM... I mean youtube is just a few clicks away..

You can also load up Boat Beacon and get an AIS that transmits your position for £6.

Try looking on Ebay or Amazon for a refurbished iPad can sometimes pick up a bargain for £150-00.

Hi Guys thanks for the info didn't think I needed a contract with it, all I need is a cellular one as I think that they have the gps receiver built in .

Whats best Ipad or Galaxy S3 ? I am not the best with computers and will get my teenage kids to set it up for me

Dave,

I was same.... Didnt know an Ipad from a brick...
I engaged dozens of peoples advise... From this forum to work colleagues to people who I saw using them.. (Great conversation starter by the way).

I eventually went for the Samsung as the general concensus was you are not tied to Apple products..
The Samsung also came with what I needed loaded and not extra's.

I got mine same time as a friend off of ebay... We bought them from germany which saved us both about £100 on UK prices, and the ONLY thing we had to do...
When it powered up the default setting for language went to German with a question of "Would you like to change language" (Or similar) we selected yes and chose English (UK)...... Done..... :-)

Yes agree, it is a matter of personal choice, I have Ipad as I have Iphone and Mac computer, so makes sense to stay with Apple products.

Got mine in a US military shop in Afghan and was the same as above just changed the settings from messed up American English to Proper English lol.

The Navionics App works great round the Solent even had a signal even as far out as the Spoils.
The only thing I would say that it will drain the battery quickly so you need to make sure you can keep it charged. Using the AIS on my Iphone, it emptied a fully charged battery in about 2 hours. I now keep phone car charger to use on the boat and also carry a charging pack for the phone/ipad.

I have rigged a car phone charger socket on the dashboard, next to the ramount.   I then use a USB car charger to charge the iPad.  You need to ensure it's a 2.1amp iPad charger, which you can get from any Apple or mobile phone shop.  Works fine and keeps it going all day.

I don't think you need a mobile signal for the built in iPad GPS to work.

I must have been making the coffee  Ray !
