hi all

quickly does anyone have any tips on fishing hurst castle   i have a sunday afternoon to kill and i want to try a new venue  was thinking that a trip out to hurst for the day might be nice  but i get the feeling that unless you are setup with the right kit and hit the right spot you may as well piss in the wind ....:)

so does anyone have any tips for me was planning to fish 1 hour of the up and the stand and a hour down right off the point looking out towards the needles during the day using a pully pennel rig with a 7oz gripper with whole squid  or squid stuffed with lug or whole mackerel sides  with 2 rods

i am a good caster reaching around 100 yds fully baited with big baits so can anyone point me in the right area of hurst for some cod action ?????? and also any advice on casting range?????

plz help

martin
Where are they ?????

its a deep venue so a 80 yards will be more than enough. fire out big squid baits on one and big lug sausages on the other. pennel pullys will be the best rig biggish hooks, 3/0-5/0

to be honest your chances will tripple if you fish evening into night. day fishing is very hit and miss at most venues.

Hi Martin
Your rig and baits will be fine. You don't need to cast far at the spot you mentioned - But there's a couple possible problems;

1) The weed is still bad in Solent - just bare in mind you may not be able to fish here at all.

2) This spot is only really properly fishable a little either side and on low water (even less on high water) - I think that is the narrowest part of the solent - so the tide literally races through there - 7 oz will just bounce along... dont think it would even touch bottom let alone grip.

3) Night is far far superior to day unless the water is very very colouredm - which with the winds at moment i dont know???

Don't wanna put a downer on your plans - but the odds are stacked against you - hope you prove me wrong! good luck!

thanks fellas

is there any merit in not fishing right on the end i hear that it is possible to fish out anywhere along the spit facing towards poole etc by parking and walking over the bank to the channel side and casting out around the 100yd range   i assume that i will still hit the northerly channel  but maybe the fish arent so good but maybe this will give a chance to hang onto the bottom for longer  would hate to walk all the way to the end if the tide is gonna suck badly on a near spring high .... and if you say the weed is still here then i stand no hope .....

has anyone fished this section of hurst ?????

my other option is to head east and try gillkicker  but i have been weeded her badly on teh point recently and had to move into the beach

any thoughts  dont get many day passes .
Where are they ?????

i normally walk up onto the bank and only walk up about 250 yards.as for casting i wouldnt try casting to far as tides r getting bigger and you will struggle to hold botten especially if its weedy i had 4 codling one after onother just about 25yards out there must be a gully there. ive never had much luck at the point and most of the time end up going back as is unfishible.

Martin-not sure what the weed is like at the moment - just mentioned it because if it is there it can make it unfishable.

If you park up and walk over the river, then over the bank to the sea, turn right past the rocks for a more manageable tide on these big tide runs - I've had the odd codling here last year whilst fishing for whiting with mackerel and squid on flappers...

If you turn left and walk 200 - 300 meters towards castle, the water is a bit deeper, more tide run, but fishable. If you keep going towards the old groynes, then the tide pull gets stronger the further you go - Cast well uptide and leave some slack for the lead to hold and you should be O.K.

iv fished here quite a few times in the last few weeks/months if you fish the shingle bank your be ok with the weeds not to much there.
the end of the wall around the back of castle would be the best spot to fish,(8oz weights always+ rotton bottems)  and move when it becomes unfishable, its about 30 mins each side this is when the fish go crazy here,i have fished a good 16 hours in this spot and is poss to fish most the tide but very hard work and amazing amounts of tackel lose if you fish whole tide and its got big snags, but worth the loss.always cast uptide and should come to a holt nicely, big bass and cod, should be willing tto take the baits.
the hole (if still weedy) will produce but its can be very hard going, but in truth there should not be alot of weed out there, although there obviosly is the last stubborn bits holding on.

or like me you could fish the lyminton open 9am till 2pm sunday £11+£1 pool, and £500 first prize singles and double's,not sure of lower prizes only go for the first one ;) lmao

thanks for all the info

i think i may not go all the way out to the end and have a stress free day instead
i was thinking however of walking our as far as the first groin and fishing somewhere around there looking at the google maps it appears that near here the water gets deep around the 13mtr mark and i hope this means the bottom isnt too rough and the race is not too strong as my gear is not the toughest  century cm and a terry woods responce with 2 magged 7ht turbos  nice setup for beach wanging but not for the rough stuff i fear

anyway will give it a go and if difficult will retreat back towards the road  going to try lepe again on monday eve with the spring low at max in the dark see whats going on down there aswell  blanked last time ..... hence my test of hurst ......

wish me luck .

There are Conger there apparently.
That's the beauty of that place though - anything could turn up!
Get yourself down there for one of the next small tides - That will be much more manageable. Or go there on a bigger tide and fish to the right of the rocks.
Good luck for tonight!
