Surely if they stray outside the marked channel they are in breach of maritime law????
Saying that, years ago I was down at Bembridge and a P&O ferry cut inside the Cardinal down there and I had a knife ready to cut my anchor rope as it was heading right at us and veered at the last minute throwing a huge wash at us.
I am sure these are reportable instances, They cant just be like that surely????
Cheers For Now, Woody ;-)

Had  a similar event some years ago again just off the ledge, a Brittany ferry came straight for us, I started the engine and waited to see if he was going to change course, at about 300 yds  he saw me and swung he's wheel, the ship leaned right over and I shot the anchor line ( had a quick release ready rigged ) and run off. The ship hit my anchor buoy fair and square and it ran along the side the full length, the wash was huge, I turned into it - I had a Pilot 17' dory - over the first wave and it buried into the trough halfway up my windscreen, after that I picked up my anchor and headed in pretty shaken up. I phoned the coastguard and they said that the channel was a guide for deep draft vessels and that they could go virtually where they liked, on the question of him heading straight for me they again said that I could bring a private court case against him but warned that it would be pointless as they had more money than me.

They might have more money than you but they do not like the publicity. Produce photographs and receipts and it is easier and cheaper for them to cough up.

It has already been done several times.

I should also add that you need to prove you were showing the correct sign (black ball) or you will get nothing, even your own insurer would not pay out.

i had the rnli do a sea check on my boat down the yard yesterday, plus life jacket checks etc. very informative. he couldnt state enough how important having a black ball showing when your at anchor, otherwise you wont get nothing from either your insurance or anyone elses. i have one ive put on a pole that sits on top of my cabin and i must get into using it every trip, especially when theres alot of sailing boats around.

luckily i had pretty much everything you should have and he was rather impressed with my setup.

Hi Guys,
displaying a black ball in daytime and an all round white light at night is a requirement but dont forget this relies on a pair of eyes from approaching vessel. In fog these are useless. I also carry a radar reflecter, Im not sure if they work but some how it makes me feel safer.

If you use a Radar reflector, and you should, buy a 'proper' one such as the Echomax. Dont rely on the aluminium tubes or diamonds they are not very effective. Echomax reflectors give forty times the reflective area of the cheapies. Mind you they cost about 100 more!
