I guess this could be one of those "light the blue touch paper and stand well back" moments.

Angling Trust have issued a press release about their latest fight with the EU.

"The Angling Trust will tell the European Commission it is wrongly targeting sea anglers following the publication this week of the Commission’s proposals on bass fishing in 2016 "to halt the dramatic decline in this important stock".

The proposals include "a complete fishing ban for commercial vessels and recreational anglers in the first half of 2016", and in the second half of 2016 "a monthly one tonne catch limit for vessels targeting sea bass and a one fish bag limit for recreational anglers".

The full press release is here at

Tin hats on!

Martyn, thank you for the info. It must only be a matter of time before we are limited on the amount of mackerel we can take judging by the numbers caught this year. I must admit that I return most of the fish i catch cause they are usually rays or dog fish. I only keep bream if they are a good pan size. Bass are great fighting fish but only caught a few this year. dave

Ok well I'll bite.
As a charter skipper that fishes for bass a lot these measures may finish me off! Did the AT think of that? And where will anglers that they 'represent ' go when they want to go on a decent charter boat to catch a bass?

Think there might be a misunderstanding here.
The proposals for tighter restrictions in 2016 are coming from the EU Commission. The AT is fighting them saying that recreational anglers are not the problem and should be left alone.
The AT are on our side!

The AT by their campaigning have contributed to this situation. Its naive to think that this wouldn't happen. The finger of blame is pointed towards anglers too!
They can shout all they like but can't have it both ways!

as said, im lead to believe it was the angling trust who started doing survey's and ultimately lead the EU to having data to start chucking there weight around. now they are back peddling as they have royally F'ed up.
this is not fair on rec fishing/ anglers and will destroy the charter fishing industry. I really feel for you both glenn, pete and many others. some of you charter guys have made your name with bassing over the years.

a genuine question to everyone here............

is anyone really finding bass numbers dropping????

for me they have massively increased in the last 5 years. I cant fish for anything without getting bass pick the bait up as a by catch.
I think where ever they got there figures on these survays, they must have been pi$$ed....lol

There have certainly been days when I'd swap a half decent bass for a few strings of mackerel.  It is very tough for the charter skippers who afterall are the ones who helped most of us discover what boat fishing is and provide a generally great value service.

No no no, none of this applies to us. They are talking about Sea Bass and there is no such thing in UK waters!!! We only have 'Bass' so fill your boots.
