Went to the forts this morning in the fog and caught a couple of bass spinning with a 4" pearl sidewinder. Both were keepers and contained several partially digested fish, about 3" long, the shape of sardines, or anchovies (not sand eels).  Does anyone know what these fish are?  The bass seemed preoccupied with them, and I only had some takes when I changed to the sidewinder.

On the far side of Ryde middle on monday we saw lots of flatish shoal marks on the sonar in the mid-upper layers, tried 4 four variants of mack lures and never got a touch!

These marks could have been macks with lockjaw (very doubtfull) or small sprats (possible) but to far off the bottom for sandeels IME.
However the macks were empty except for a few 4cm/1.5in fry recently eaten, and lures of this size caught the macks well.

If anyone has obtained a positive ID of similar shoals please post.

Thanks for the replies. I looked up both spratts and sand smelt on google, and I think the bait fish at the forts on Sunday were probably sand smelts (slightly smaller than spratts).
